The Wang: Erection Year – A Collection of Strips by Stan Yan
"What if Charlie Brown grew up?" is how Wade Busby of The Guide described Eugene Wang, the protagonist of Yan’s graphic novel series, The Wang. "And what if Charlie Brown was Asian?" is the rhetorical question Yan dares to ask in this latest bound edition. The result is this attractive, square-bound collection — a pu pu platter of inside jokes that give readers a flavor of what it is like to grow up as an Chinese-American in a white bread town like Denver, Colorado. In addition to the introduction of Dildo, Kristin’s popular new pet wiener dog, story lines revolving around insider trading in the stock brokerage industry, … and the US Presidential erection (ahem) election run of Eugene’s college roomie and self-made motivational speaker, George, will leave readers full of laughter, and hungry for more an hour later.
ISBN/EAN13: 0975504185 / 9780975504185, 60 pg. b&w 8.25" x 6" book with color, square bound cover. Mature. $6.95 US. Shipping December 2009.

And don
Yes, don’t miss our table in San Diego at Comic-Con – K-14 in the Small Press. Please come by to commission a zombie caricature or other artwork from Stan Yan, Zak Hennessey, Josh Mills, Mike Hance and Alex Lopez, who will also be signing copies of their latest work and giving away free bookmarks and other schwag. More information on our booth location can be found at the SubCulture website.
Sunday, July 12th from 1 – 4 pm, there’s a Squid Works meeting
scheduled at Enchanted Grounds at 8800 S. Colorado Blvd. in Highlands
Ranch.
303-470-1010.
The agenda for this meeting is as follows:
1) Cheesecake pinups! We’re looking for pin-ups for a cheesecake
pinup book featuring cheesecake recipes in time for NDK. You can see
more at our forum thread here:
http://www.squidworks.com/forums/index.php?topic=715.0
2) It looks like our final roster for the Squid Works table in San
Diego is final: Stan Yan, Josh Mills, Zak Hennessey, Mike Hance, and
Alex Lopez. If you are one of these exhibitors, you are entitled to 1
vertical banner slot (14" wide by 32" tall) OR alternately table edge
space, and enough table space for only a limited variety of your work.
I will attempt to maximize table space with two foam-core waterfall
racks, but they won’t carry a lot of weight. There will be some
under-table space on either side to store additional copies of your
work. Please be realistic about what you can sell and plan for what
you hope to accomplish at and away from the table. We can talk more
at the meeting if you can make it. We’ll do a little SD pow-wow of
our group, exchange phone numbers, etc.
3) Squids I owe money to are John Peters and Will Barnes. Will,
sorry I didn’t get a chance to talk to you more at CowTown, but I
wanted to talk to you about dues, uncashed checks and the like. If
you can’t make the meeting, send me an e-mail.
4) 24 Hour Comics People 2: Dead by Dawn ROYALTIES!!!. Yes, you
heard right! If you’re a contributor, I’ll pay you your royalties at
the meeting. If you can’t make the meeting, I’ll mail you a check.
Let me know if you’d rather apply your royalty payment towards the
purchase of additional books. For those of you who contributed to 24
Hour Comics People #1, we’re still waiting for Wowio to pay us for
our 1st quarter to get us above $10 per contributor, at which time I
was going to payout. We should probably discuss whether or not we
want to offer 24HCP2 for download or not, and if we do, via what
service. We also should probably discuss whether or not to terminate
our contract with Wowio on the first book so we can reoffer it via
another service.
5) Steering Committee meeting at NOON is on! I need to speak with Al
and Zack mainly about Outlook Express-related items and ideas
pertaining to the site redesign that has been 2 years in process so
far. Other SC members should feel free to attend and discuss.
That’s all I have. If you have anything else to make a part of
agenda, bring it!
Thanks!
Stan Yan

I might not be at the meeting, as we’re entertaining out-of-town

its state prior to our last meeting
For those of you looking to join us at Comic-Con (Mike Schlosky) that

NOTE CHANGE OF WEEKEND (Due to Mother’s Day): Sunday, May 17th from 1 – 4 pm, there’s a Squid Works meeting scheduled at Enchanted Grounds at 8800 S. Colorado Blvd. in Highlands Ranch. 303-470-1010.
The major item for the agenda this month is Comic-Con! Well, it turns out we’re official. We’ve gotten our table in the Small Press Pavillion, table K-14 again. If you’re interested in sharing table space with us, I need to know asap and for you to fulfill the following requirements. 1) You must let me know of your interest no later than Sunday, May 17th (I know it’s short notice, but I need to be able to publicize you, and they require documents back to them shortly after); 2) Once we’ve gotten a head count, I’ll let participating members know how much their split of the $350 table is, and you must pay me by mail or via PayPal no later than June 1st; 3) You MUST apply for a Professional attendee badge (the table only comes with 2 badges, so to get everyone else in, we need you to appy for this (it’s free), but do it soon. Full weekend badges sold out months ago, so this is the only way you’ll be able to get in for the full weekend. If you haven’t gotten a badge, it might be too late — May 5th was the cut-off, but keep trying.) The link is: http://comic-con.org/cci/cci_pros.shtml; 4) Also, in the spirit of fairness, this is a 6′ table with only about 2 or 2 1/2′ of depth, so understand you should bring a LIMITED selection of whatever you decide to bring. Under-table space is also limited, so don’t plan to bring 1000 copies of your latest graphic novel or t-shirt — be realistic. I can talk to you more about logistics once we get all of this squared away.
The catalog for this month is pretty much set, although there’s still time for some of you, (OZZY and NOAH) to get me your catalog submission forms so your publications can be added to our quarterly update, which will be going out shortly aftere the upcoming meeting. Right now, our only new publication is 24 Hour Comics People 2: Dead by Dawn, which is now in print and available for purchase. We also received a slew of news, interviews, and reviews. Ethan Wenberg also released a new Mr. Flingpoo flash video game to add to our online offerings! Let me know if I’m missing anything or if you would like to add your offering to this update (or the next… it’s never too early to get a jump on the next update).
Finally, STEERING COMMITTEE members. Well, mostly Al and me, but if others of you would like to sit in on the technological fun, that’d be fine. Al, I need to sit down with you with our Google Apps and talk about what I would like to do and where we need to go from here. That part of the meeting will begin at noon and go for an hour.
Finally, please keep an eye on the forums, as many job offerings, calls for submissions, and other time-sensitive info is listed there. One thing I’d like to just mention is that the Colorado Alliance of Illustrators annual show is still taking submissions for the May 15th opening, but you must get your work and registration in by the 11th. You can register here.
That’s it. If you have anything you’d like to add to the agenda, please bring it to the meeting!

Apologies for those of you outside of the Colorado area for including you on this message unnecessarily.
This is a friendly reminder that our next Squid Works meeting is next Sunday, February 8th from 1 – 4 pm, there’s a Squid Works meeting scheduled at Enchanted Grounds at 8800 S. Colorado Blvd. in Highlands Ranch. Sadly, I won’t be able to attend, as I’ll be in New York for the New York Comic Con, so tell all of your NYC friends to visit my booth in Artist Alley, table J1 (Brendan Wenberg will be at L1), for the fresh-off-the-presses SubCulture: The TPB . There is no official steering committee meeting at noon, but I would suggest that Al and Craig get there early to discuss domain ownership issues and the importance of getting that squared away (I believe my desire to leave Comcast as a service provider kinds of hinges on this). We also have a vote in progress on the forums about the printer we’re going to use for the 24 Hour Comics book.
So, our agenda:
1) For those of you wanting to partipate in any of our programming or propose programming for the upcoming Opus Fantasy Arts Festival on March 13th – 16th and hasn’t spoken to me about it, it’s really getting almost too late to do so, as I needed to submit the
programming forms by last Sunday. Still, you can try forwarding them to me and I’ll do what I can. More info on the forum thread here: http://www.squidworks.com/forums/index.php?topic=596.0
2) For those of you who I haven’t talked to about Starfest that would like to share table space with us either in the horror room or in the comics room, let me know. I don’t know how big each table is, but I’m told they’re $95 each. We already have enough folks interested that I’m guessing we’ll do more than one table even if we’re just in one room. Zac, Robert and Brendan have confirmed interest. I’d like to know if Josh or Ozzy want to also get in on rotation at the zombicatures booth (Robert, Brendan and I will likely run it at this juncture). I’m open to having another table or two in the comics room if those of you not selling horror stuff want a place to set up. Please let me know asap.
3) For those of you who have books to sell and original artwork you’d be willing to frame and hang, check out this thread:
http://www.squidworks.com/forums/index.php?topic=631.0. I don’t know how much room we’ll have, but this might be a great
venue for launching the 24 Hour Comics People II: Dead By Dawn anthology for those of you who contributed stories to that book. Just let me know of your interest. It may be curated if we have more entries than space, but don’t let that scare you off.
4) Last, but definitely not least is the quarterly catalog update. Right now the only new books in the hopper for our coming update is 24 Hour Comics People II: Dead By Dawn and an update on the release of SubCulture: The TPB. Please let me know no later than the weekend of the meeting whether or not you have something new for the update, as I need to get the materials put together and shipped by end of month.
Thanks!
